Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

I remember when I was in grade school if I acted up my 4th grade teacher would take me into the coat closet and give me a couple good whacks with her special paddle that hung on a hook by the door that had inscribed on it "Use When Needed". As a hyper little hellion I seemed to need it a lot. Now she never hit me that hard or never gave more than about 3 whacks.

I remember once when I did something real stupid Mrs, Loidalt actually paddled me in front of the class. I was sooo humbled by that experience I behaved like an absolute angel for the rest of the entire day.

My point is I got paddled a lot in grade school and I suffer no emotional or physical scars from the experience. I probably was a better more attentive student as a result. A little fear and a red ass can be a great motivator at times. And the school had written permission from my parents to deal with me in the best way they saw fit.

Now the student teacher relationship and parent teacher relationships are ordered down from policy wonks and school boards (also wonks) and in some cases legislated into law.

Should the teachers and schools take charge of the students education and enforce student discipline at their own discretion?

Should we continue to spare the rod and spoil the child. Or should we beat the brats into speaking proper English.

Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

Well, any teacher that tries to paddle an inner city, high school kid better be wearing some quality Kevlar, and I do not mean standard Army issue.

Biff:

Thanks to the link for your pictures and wall--very good!

i agree with you on corporal punishment for kids.  It was a simpler time in our day, but it still would do these kids some good.  The teachers today just don't get backed up in general by parents and are left hanging in terms of discipline.

Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

Back then kids were scared of the teachers, at least I know I was.  I remember those paddlings also.  I skipped class once and tried to slip off with my friends, and my asst. principle caught me. He told me, either I give you 3 paddles or we call your parents. I told him to go ahead and paddle me, because I knew it would have been worse at home. I turned out ok.

Now a days, most of the teachers are afraid of the kids, especially at high school. They pretty much have to watch their backs because you never know.

If we continue to spare the rod and spoil the child, the cops will take if from there, and use what they know best at trying to tame them.

Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

Well, as a teacher at an inner-city elementary school I can tell you that there have been plenty of times when I felt like whacking a kid, but I'm against that type of corporal punishment.  I think it's hypocritical to try to teach children that there are better ways of solving problems than with violence, and then turn around a paddle kids who mis-behave.  I just think it sends the wrong message.

On the other hand, students are very savvy today and they know teachers have very little in terms of punishments that they can use.  Technically raising your voice to a child is considered corporal punishment.  It forces you to be very creative with discipline.  There is absolutly a problem with students' lack of respect for teachers, but I find it generally comes from the parents.  Like they say, apples don't fall far from apple trees.

Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

This so fits with my Dark Ages blog. I have a friend that on two separate occasions has hired on to teach (in English) in China. He had been a physics teacher for many years in America. From what he tells me, we better all be learning to speak Chinese.

Corporal Punishment in Public Schools

The problem though isn't just the kids.  Not long ago, there was a newspaper article about a local gas station owner getting sued by the parents of  a 13 year old.  Seems they were upset that the owner got mad at their little angel who was throwing rocks down at the air-bell tube in the gas station, trying to ring the bell.  The owner saw him, and came out of the station and grabbed the kid by the front of his shirt, and hauled him into the station, and called the cops.

They were suing the guy for grabbing their kid.

I read the article in disbelief.  I wasn't an angel growing up, and my parents knew this.  If that kid had been me, my Dad would have tanned my butt, then marched me to the station where I would have apologized to the owner, or I wouldn't have sat down for weeks.  Then I would have been grounded until I turned about 18.  Nowadays, parents seem to take their kid's side in everything.  "Little Johnny couldn't have poured paint all over your car, you must have seen someone else."

I've always thought that when I decide to retire from Engineering, I might like to teach High School.  I figure I owe one of my math teachers for getting me where I am, and that would be the best way I could repay her.  I could teach Math, History, or maybe Physics.  When I talk to my wife about it, she always laughs and tells me that I simply would kill one of the kids, because of the attitudes and general goings on in school.

I do know that I have been grabbed in a head lock, thrown against lockers, and actually taken to the ground  by some of my past teachers to break up schoolyard fights, and I can't imagine what teachers do today in the same instance.  I can guarentee you that if we had known the teachers couldn't touch you, those fights would have been much worse.
